Christmas Craft for Kids – Snow Globe

What young child isn't mesmerized by a snow globe? Many of us have owned a plastic snow globe or two when we were kids and some of us continue with the tradition in the form of elegant, glass snow globes. While the youngest of children enjoy the magic of making the snowflakes drift down silently onto a winter village or Santa scene, older children will have fun creating their own snow globes for themselves or as Christmas gifts. Preschool children and up can take part in this craft activity, but the younger children will need some help.

Encourage the children to use their imaginations. Using miniatures, a snow globe scene can consist of just about anything, such as:

Santa and reindeer.
Winter castle.
Scene from the Nutcracker Ballet.
Miniature rendition of your home.
Favorite animal.
Village scene.
Christmas tree.
Sled and children.

You can purchase glass and plastic at craft stores and toy sections of many kinds of stores. Children may enjoy making their own figures with craft foam.

To create background scene, cut out pictures from magazines or print outs from the computer (photographers, picture from a Web page, etc.). Tape the scene to the outside of the jar (back and/or sides) facing inwards.

You will also need:

Clean Jar and tight fitting lid, such as a baby food or salsa jar.
Aquarium sealant (silicone) (to ensure lid doesn't leak).
Florist clay for keeping the scene's figures in place (sealant or with older children, a hot glue gun, can be used instead.)
Snow in the form of white glitter, foil confetti or crushed eggshells.
Distilled water or mineral oil (baby oil).

*The globe itself can be any size that is easy for the child to hold and turn upside down. When choosing the container, consider the size of the miniatures to be used in the scene and/or the complexity of the scene and dexterity of the child.

The globe doesn't have to be made with a recycled jar. You could use a sturdy, round, clear glass vase (such as used to float candles or gardenias), in which case you'd need to have a top that won't crack and leak once secured. If you'd prefer your children not use glass, you can find acrylic bell jars and empty snow globes at craft stores (online or large chains like Michaels).

Finally, here are the directions. These use a jar, so if you are not using a container with a ready made lid, you will need to improvise with a piece of material that will not leak and that you can attach with a seal such as an

aquarium sealant.

Directions for Snow Globe Craft

Place the lid upside down, and gather the figures that you will use to create the scene.
Using the florist clay or alternative, adhere the figures to the lid, leaving room around the edges for screwing on the jar. If the lid is deep, fill up with florist clay or sealant first so that the figures can be fully viewed after the jar is added.
If using a picture scene, tape this to the outside of the jar.
Gently pour distilled water into the jar, and then add a few drops of glycerin. Or use mineral oil. Either method will keep the snow from falling down too quickly.
Add your snow. If using crushed eggshells, you may want to add a little silver or white glitter to make it sparkle. Add a little at a time, closing the jar and shaking to see how it looks.
Once it's how you want it, add a little sealant to the lid to make sure it doesn't leak, and enjoy!
